When Exmoor Glows
Exmoor is one of Annie’s favourite landscapes. She is inspired by the contrast between the wild moor in the foreground and the managed, farmed landscape in the distance. She is interested in the boundaries which occur between the two and the interplay of light on the landscape. She frequently walks the landscape with her two labradors, makes quick sketches, takes notes and a few photos. She works mostly in her studio where she can work on more than one canvas at a time, experimenting with colour, tone and mark making, until she is statisfied that she has achieved the atmosphere she experienced on her walk.
Annie takes her inspiration from the works of J.M.W. Turner and more recent work by Joan Eardley. Increasingly Annie is taking risks with her paintings and developing a more dynamic style akin to Jill Eisele and David Tress. Painted primarily using a palette knife and rags, Annie is able to imply and infer the textures of the landscape with deft strokes and mark making.
